Troubleshooting

Try these fixes before reporting a bug. If the issue persists, file a bug reportarrow-up-right.

App Won't Launch

macOS: App won't open

If the app fails to launch, try reinstalling from the .dmg file. Ensure you're running macOS 11 (Big Sur) or later.

Windows: App won't start

Ensure you have the latest Visual C++ Redistributable installed. Reinstall from the official installer if issues persist.

Linux: Missing dependencies

Native packages (.deb, .rpm) are recommended and include dependencies.

For AppImage, install required libraries:

# Ubuntu/Debian
sudo apt install libwebkit2gtk-4.1-0 libgtk-3-0

# Fedora
sudo dnf install webkit2gtk4.1 gtk3

Make the AppImage executable:

Skeleton Key Issues

"Invalid mnemonic" when entering my words

  • Check for typos - words must match the BIP39 word list exactly

  • Ensure you have exactly 24 words

  • Words are case-sensitive (use lowercase)

  • Check for extra spaces or line breaks

Forgot my Skeleton Key

There is no recovery. The Skeleton Key encrypts your data locally. Without it, your data cannot be decrypted.

If you never synced to another device, your data is unrecoverable. This is by design for security.

Prevention: Always write down your 24 words when first setting up.

Skeleton Key won't save

Check that the app has permission to access the system keychain:

  • macOS: System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Keychain Access

  • Windows: Run as Administrator if needed

  • Linux: Ensure libsecret is installed

Sync Not Working

Hearth: Devices not discovering each other

  1. Same network? Both devices must be on the same local network (same WiFi, same subnet)

  2. Firewall? Allow Skelenote through your firewall

  3. VPN? Disable VPN - it may block local mDNS traffic

  4. Skeleton Key fingerprints match? Check Settings > Sync on both devices

Still not working? Try:

Hearth: Connected but not syncing

  • Check that both devices have the same Skeleton Key

  • Wait a few seconds - initial sync can take time

  • Try toggling Hearth off and on in Settings

Courier: Connection failed

  1. Check your relay server URL in Settings > Sync > Cloud

  2. Verify the server is running and accessible

  3. Check for firewall or proxy issues

  4. If self-hosting, verify TLS certificates are valid

Editor Issues

Can't type in the editor

  • Click inside the editor area to focus it

  • Try pressing Escape then clicking again

  • Check if a modal or menu is open (press Escape to close)

@mentions not working

  • Type @ followed by text to search

  • Wait for the suggestion popup

  • Use arrow keys to navigate, Enter to select

  • If no results appear, the object may not exist yet

Content not saving

Skelenote auto-saves with a 300ms debounce. If content seems lost:

  1. Wait a few seconds after editing

  2. Check if the app froze (try clicking elsewhere)

  3. Look at the console for errors (Cmd+Option+I on macOS)

Search Issues

Search returns no results

  • Title search: Only searches object titles

  • Content search: Searches inside object content

  • Lantern: Must be enabled in Settings (uses local AI)

Try broader search terms. Exact matches work better than partial words.

Lantern is slow

The first time you enable Lantern, it generates embeddings for all content. This is a one-time process. Subsequent searches are faster.

Performance Issues

App is slow or laggy

  • Large vault? Performance degrades with 1000+ objects. We're optimizing.

  • Close other apps to free up memory

  • Restart the app to clear any memory leaks

High CPU usage

Check if Lantern is indexing. This is temporary and will complete.

If CPU stays high:

  1. Check console for error loops (Cmd+Option+I)

  2. Try disabling Hearth/Courier sync temporarily

  3. Report the issue with console logs

Data Recovery

Restore from backup

If you exported a backup previously:

  1. Open Settings → Data → Import

  2. Select Markdown Files (or Obsidian for vault backups)

  3. Choose your backup files and import

See Export & Import Guidearrow-up-right for full instructions.
